Unmissable events in Mérida
1 December — Oveja Negra Fest
December kicks off with the best music. If you’re wondering where to go in Mérida on the first of the month, the place to be is the Centro de Espectáculos Montejo. This venue will witness Oveja Fest. The festival has a generous lineup including Jonaz of Plastilina Mosh, Playa Limbo, Jenny and The Mexicats, Caballo Dorado and many others.
7 December — Danna Paola concert
Triumphing in Europe, Danna Paola begins her tour in Mexico. On 7 December she performs at Blùe disco.
7 to 12 December — 2nd Trova Festival
Without doubt, this is a good excuse if you’re wondering where to go in Mérida. With prestigious local and foreign artists, from 7 to 12 December this major event will take place, with the participation of Silvio Rodríguez, Caetano Veloso, Pablo Milanés, Natalia Lafourcade and others. It’s at Parque Kukulcán Álamo.
13 to 14 December — La Noche Blanca
Again, on 13 December an edition of La Noche Blanca begins. In its 12th edition, this traditional event promises interesting days of art and culture. With more than 100 activities, 100 venues and 200 artists, it’s the most anticipated festival of the year. Most activities will take place, as is customary, in Mérida’s historic centre, and this year it will include the exhibition “Picasso, Genius of the Arts”, bringing together 100 works by Pablo Picasso.
Until 15 December — Yucatán and Its Customs Festival
The best of traditional Yucatecan music and dance is found at this festival, which will take place at the Palacio de la Música.
Events in Mérida all year round
Free public concerts and events are very characteristic of towns and cities all over Mexico, but if you’re going to live in Mérida you’ll notice they’re common there. Every night of the week, the city hosts a wide variety of activities including music and dance. Some are:
Monday — Vaquería Nights
In front of the City Hall on Plaza Grande, every Monday you can see a performance of local dances with traditional costumes of the area.
Tuesday — Musical Remembrances
On Tuesdays the place to be is Santiago. There you’ll see how couples and families from all over the city gather and dance to the live music of the 1940s.
Thursday — Santa Lucía Serenade
This open-air concert of live music and traditional dances has been a tradition in the city for 40 years. If you’re going to live in Mérida, head to Santa Lucía park at 9 p.m., get a table at one of the many restaurants bordering the park and enjoy the show.
Friday — Ball Game
Have you ever imagined what an ancient Maya ball game would be like? On Fridays, in front of the Cathedral, you can see a re-enactment of this Maya game in which the aim is to hit the ball through a stone hoop with the hips and shoulders. Let yourself be wrapped up in the sound and light of an emulated game so you get to know it from its ancestral origin.
Saturday — Mexican Night
Every Saturday at El Remate park (at the end of the centre of Paseo Montejo) you’ll find traditional food, crafts and performances by dancers, singers and even comedians from all over Mexico.
