The cenotes you can reach by Maya Train

The Maya Train doesn’t drop you at the mouth of the cenote, but it does leave you a taxi ride from several of the best ones. Here’s the map for a car-free day of cenotes.

First, two logistics points: the Mérida station is Teya (on the outskirts, not downtown) and from the platform to the cenote there’s always a final stretch by taxi, moto-taxi or shared van. Bring cash. For the basics of the train, read Maya Train from Mérida Teya.

From the Izamal station

• Cenotes around Sudzal and Kimbilá, 15–25 minutes by taxi. Less touristy, ideal to combine with the yellow town — Izamal.

From the Chichén Itzá station

The best base for cenotes by train:

• Cenote Ik Kil, 5 minutes from the archaeological site; there’s constant transport.
• Cenote Yokdzonot, ~20 minutes towards Mérida; a community cooperative, with food.
• Combine: ruins early in the morning, cenote at midday, back on the afternoon train. See how to get to Chichén Itzá.

From the Valladolid station

The area with the most accessible cenotes:

• Cenote Zací, inside the city of Valladolid: you reach it on foot from the centre. The only one that needs no taxi.
• Cenotes Dzitnup (Samulá and X’Keken), 10 minutes by taxi.
• Cenote Suytun and Cenote Oxman, 10–15 minutes.
• Valladolid has lodging to stay a night and do two or three cenotes at leisure.

From Quintana Roo stations (if you continue east)

• Cenote Verde Lucero and the Puerto Morelos Cenote Route, from the stations in that area.
• The Riviera Maya has hundreds, but there it’s better to rent a car or a bike.

The car-free plan, in short

1. Morning train Mérida (Teya) → Valladolid.
2. Cenote Zací on foot + taxi to Dzitnup.
3. Lunch in central Valladolid.
4. Cenote Suytun or Oxman in the afternoon.
5. Train back to Mérida.
