We have all felt the urge to stop for a moment just to exist, to contemplate time — and dusk is the right moment.

One of the advantages of living in Yucatán, besides how close its beaches are, is that the peninsula stages a twilight show every evening, so finding a place to admire the colours of the world is never a problem.

It is a fact: anyone who visits Yucatán will say the sky is different from any other Mexican state. That is thanks to the peninsula’s geographical position, the pollution-free air and the flatness of the land, which lets you watch open horizons at sea level.

The clouds in Yucatán are huge, heavy or light as a brushstroke, and adorn the sky with their shapes. Do you know the types of clouds?

Luckily, Yucatán is the perfect place to learn to name and recognise them — and to impress your companion with the Latin terms. There are four main groups, which in turn split into other classifications.

Cirrus clouds are found in the highest layers of the atmosphere. They have a rough or fibrous texture.

Stratus clouds look like white watercolour strokes on a blue canvas. As the name suggests, they are made of layers.

Cumulus clouds are large, perhaps the most admired on sunny days, grouping together to form vertical mounds. Cumulus are the type of cloud you will often see at Mérida’s sunsets.

Finally, nimbus clouds are the prelude to storms and rain. A day that starts with nimbus ends in rain. They look a bit like cumulus but in grey tones and “broken” shapes.

Nimbus are also the favourite companions of beautiful sunsets on beaches near Mérida. In summer, expect some light rain preceded by nimbus.

Life in Yucatán means finding peace just by looking at the sky from the window. If the beach isn’t an option, within the city you will always find places to spend the evening beside the dusk.

If you are downtown, the Plaza Grande is a good spot to watch a sunset. Several buildings in the area have terraces for the sundown. You can go to the terrace of Hotel Piedra de Agua, with a view of the cathedral. We recommend trying its pizzas with an ice-cold beer.

On any tourist’s or new resident’s list, Paseo de Montejo should appear. On this grand avenue, the heart of the city, you can choose restaurants, hotels or cafés to admire the sunset.

San Crisanto

This fishing village, 52 kilometres from Progreso, has one of the state’s most beautiful beaches, surrounded by imposing nature.

One feature of San Crisanto is that every night the tide goes out a few metres, making it a unique place to watch beautiful sunsets — or to camp and spend the night under the stars.

Chelem

This beautiful fishing port is near Mérida, west of Progreso. Here you’ll forget the big hotels and enjoy a picturesque village with narrow white-sand streets, a few metres from a crystal-clear sea.

For a bit of adventure, there are boat trips around its estuary, where you’ll spot several bird species that live in the mangroves. Beautiful sunsets dress Chelem every day.

Celestún

A privileged place if you’re going to live in Mérida is Celestún. Known as one of Mexico’s most famous pink flamingo sanctuaries, it is surrounded by incredible natural sites and is home to thousands of Yucatán’s flora and fauna.

The village also stands out for its calm, paradise beaches. Like a painting, in Celestún the beige sand contrasts with the water, which in places reaches very dark blue tones.

Dzilam de Bravo

130 kilometres from Mérida sits the village of Dzilam de Bravo. A historic port — this is where the Spanish landed. It is a place of natural wonders and beautiful beaches, the perfect setting to watch the sunset.
